About the trainer
👋🏻 Meet Miss Amanda!
Miss Amanda emerged from humble beginnings with a rich biracial heritage woven from her mother's Dutch roots and her father's Caribbean ancestry. Raised in the underprivileged enclave of Toronto known as Jane and Finch, Amanda's early years were marked by resilience and tenacity.
Amanda started at Driftwood Public School, but took a unique turn to Tumpane P.S. as she became a participant in the Ontario French Immersion program, signalling an early embrace of educational opportunities beyond her immediate surroundings.
From her earliest days, Amanda's passion for dance burned brightly. Her parents paint a vivid picture of a toddler in love with music and movement. As she grew, Amanda found inspiration in the vibrant music videos of the '80s, mimicking the moves of icons like Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Madonna.
Yet, it was a neighbour's well-intentioned concern about her weight that set Amanda's dance journey on a more structured path. Recognizing her daughter's affinity for dance and a need for more exercise, Amanda's mother sought out a suitable dance program, despite the few options in their community.
They decided to travel to Woodbrige for jazz, tap, and ballet classes—a journey fraught with financial strain, long commutes, and the discomfort of not feeling fully welcomed or represented.
The acquisition of a car in 1990 marked a turning point for Amanda and her mother, facilitating their search for a dance home that resonated with their values of inclusivity and cultural diversity. In Thornhill, they found a sanctuary—a dance school that not only nurtured Amanda's talent but also became the cornerstone of her future endeavours.
Balancing rigorous dance training, up to 20 hours per week, with the demands of a challenging French Immersion program, Amanda's dedication knew no bounds. Her investment in dance education bore fruit as she transitioned from student to teacher, ultimately embarking on a journey as a Dance Studio Owner while balancing her 2nd year at TMU (formerly Ryerson) for Theatre Technical Production with a focus on Costume Design and Stage Management. Amanda expanded her dance school to a second location while studying in her 4th year of university.
By 2010, Amanda's impact on the dance community was undeniable, boasting a teaching team of over 30, with hundreds of enrolled students and thousands of parents and audience members touched by her passion and dedication.
In 2018, Amanda's commitment to accessibility and inclusivity led her to transform her dance schools into a single not-for-profit entity, shifting her focus to underserved communities like Jane and Finch. Giving up lavish facilities with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, ballet barres and sprung floors, for elementary school gyms and the bare essentials.
Amanda emphasized that it's not the surroundings but the mission, vision and values of passionate teachers, that truly shape a child's dance journey.
Amanda is on a mission to give every child the chance to dance.
She invites you to join her on her mission as well as help her foster a culture of lifelong learning and appreciation for the arts—a journey where every step is made with purpose and passion.
